It was a glorious weekend at the June Sprints for the Formula 600 Challenge. Huge thanks to the SCCA Chicago region for including us in the premier Hoosier Super Tour event of the year.

The large field of F600s (15 cars) took to the track for practice on Friday, followed by qualifying sessions on Saturday and Sunday. The top 5 on the final grid were a “Who’s Who” of F600 champions and top drivers—James Weida, Aaron Ellis, Keth Joslyn, Calvin Stewart and Sven de Vries, while Jack Walbran and Paul McBride also set personal best times.

After beautiful dry weather for most of the weekend, scattered showers on Sunday made for last-minute tire choices before the 3:55 p.m. race. It was raining heavily most of the afternoon but stopped about an hour before the green flag. Most competitors had fitted rain tires but changed to slicks as the track dried remarkably fast. Calvin Stewart, Keith Joslyn and Steve Jondal stuck with rains or intermediates.

When the green flag dropped on a sunny dry track, Weida picked up from his 2024 Runoffs win and began pulling away from the pack. He was never challenged and would have won by a larger margin without the two full-course yellows. The race-long battle for the other podium spots was exciting, with Joslyn, Stewart and de Vries trading places every lap. Ellis fell off at the start but stormed back into the battle after the first full-course yellow. Eventually Joslyn and Stewart began losing grip due to their tire choices. The well-earned podium was Weida, de Vries and Ellis.
